His earliest introduction to plastic surgery was through his uncle, Dr. John Hartley, former president of the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons. When he was fifteen years old, he spent a summer in the operating room observing his Uncle's procedures. He has been dedicated to the specialty ever since. He received his B.A. degree in 1969 from the University of Iowa, and he earned his M.D. in 1973 from Northwestern University Medical School.
