I am pleased you have chosen to learn more about Smith Plastic Surgery, as this gives me an opportunity to introduce myself and tell you a little about my background and our philosophy here at Smith Plastic Surgery.During my many years of training, I have had the opportunity to live in all parts of the country and to train at some of the finest medical institutions in the world. Along with my personal background, this training and experience shaped my philosophy regarding medicine in general and plastic surgery specifically. Plastic surgery blends science and art. I treat every surgery as if it is a work of art -- something that I will be proud of when it is finished. I treat each patient as if they are a personal friend, using cutting-edge technology combined with old-fashioned values. Nothing takes the place of caring and concern.My father was a doctor who specialized in Psychiatry. He loved his work and cared very much about his patients so much so, that I remember people stopping him in stores or other places to thank him for his help. I cannot remember wanting to be anything else but a physician, like my father.As the oldest of 10 children, I developed a sense of responsibility and a strong work ethic that has served me well throughout my life. In school, I excelled in both sports and academics. Focusing on my desire to become a physician, I finished high school early and graduated from college when I was 18. I then spent two years on a service mission for my church, after which I entered the University of Utah medical school -- at age 20, the youngest student in my class. As one of the top graduates in my medical school, I was awarded membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society the greatest academic honor medical students can achieve.In medical school, I learned that I loved surgery. Surgeons see all the toughest problems and they make amazing changes in people s lives. Surgery also requires good hand-eye coordination, something I am fortunate to have from my experience as a high school and college athlete. Initially, I was attracted to Ear, Nose, Throat/Head and Neck Surgery as a specialty. I attended one of the top schools for this specialty, at the time -- the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and received the highest score in the country on the federal licensure exam, one of the two national examinations every medical student must pass in order to become a licensed physician.I was introduced to facial plastic surgery during my surgical training in Texas and quickly developed a love for it. This type of surgery is not only an artistic challenge, it changes lives.As a resident, I also became interested in organized medicine. I was elected president of the Texas Medical Association-Resident Physician Section and sat on the Texas Council of Medical Education, helping craft health care policy and legislation. I was also elected president of the House staff at my hospital and received many awards and honors during my training. I continue to serve in various medical organizations, including as secretary of the Rocky Mountain Plastic Surgery Society and President of the Las Vegas Plastic Surgery Society, which I helped form.Following my residency in Texas, I moved to Palo Alto for a Facial Plastic Fellowship at Stanford University and was fortunate to also teach as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery. At the end of this fellowship, I was honored by the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery with the Jack Anderson Award for once again achieving the highest score on a national exam.I initially practiced near my home town in Utah. While there, I participated in my first medical mission to Zimbabwe. Since then, I have joined other medical missions to other parts of the world on a regular basis. I believe that as physicians and human beings we should give back to the community.Because I wanted to become further specialized in Plastic Surgery, I left my busy practice in Utah to do a fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the world-famous Mayo Clinic. There I was fortunate to work with some of the great pioneers of plastic and reconstructive surgery, including reconstructive breast surgery. That training has enabled me to deal with some of the more difficult problems that present in the field of plastic surgery. In 2001, while at the Mayo Clinic, I received an award from the American Plastic Surgery Society for the best research paper on Aesthetic Surgery for the resident physician section.Following that training, I decided to enter practice in the Las Vegas area. I liked the warmer winters here and I knew Las Vegas was a growing city with many opportunities. I enjoy living here and have met many wonderful friends. Because Vegas is a crossroads for the United States, there is always something interesting or exciting going on in town.
